About Doom
The Jaguar version of Doom was published by Atari and was developed by id Software. It was released on November 28, 1994. Like the PC version, this version of Doom was developed on the NEXTSTEP platform, and compiled to run on the Jaguar. The bulk of the engine was programmed by John Carmack, while Dave Taylor handled the multiplayer code. This version was the first official port of Doom to begin its development cycle, although the 32X version was released first. The 32X, 3DO, GBA and PlayStation ports are all derived from this port.

The port John Carmack wrote himself — and the foundation for nearly every console Doom that followed.
Jaguar Doom's significance isn't just that it's comfortably the best of the 1994 console conversions — full-screen, smooth, correct feel, 22 of the PC's 27 maps. It's that Carmack did the conversion personally, with Dave Taylor on multiplayer, and the level modifications made here to fit the hardware carried forward into the 32X, 3DO, and PlayStation versions and beyond. There's no music during gameplay — the Jerry chip was busy with graphics work — which leaves the sound design running clean. Given the choice, Carmack picked correctly.
It was also the first Jaguar game to support the JagLink interface: two consoles over an RJ-11 phone cable for co-op and deathmatch. Only two other games ever supported JagLink — AirCars and BattleSphere. And the keypad earns its keep here: number keys 1–7 select weapons instantly, years before mouse wheels made that standard.
Before you buy
Very common and among the cheapest carts on the platform — a $15-tier keeper, no counterfeit concern. The flip side: Doom shells are a common donor for repros of expensive titles, so when inspecting a suspicious high-value cart, check for adhesive ghosting from a removed Doom label.
