Space Invaders: Virtual Collection on Wikipedia
Space Invaders is a 1978 shoot 'em up game developed and published by Taito for arcades. Taito released it in Japan in July 1978 and overseas through a partnership with Midway Manufacturing later that year. Space Invaders was the first video game with endless gameplay and the first fixed shooter, setting the template for the genre. The goal is to defeat waves of descending aliens with a horizontally moving laser cannon to earn as many points as possible.

A globally recognised brand on a tiny Japanese print run — and Taito just put it on Switch Online.
Taito's Japan-only release: the original Space Invaders plus a 3D-rendered version using the display. It rates as what it is — a thirty-year-old arcade game with a depth effect bolted on — and every bit of its value was scarcity: small print run, no Western release, a famous brand on the label. Its arrival on Nintendo Switch Online removed the play-access case for the cartridge, but the brand recognition means it likely holds better than a no-name scarcity cart; a Space Invaders box has display value independent of playability.
What the press said at the time
| Weekly Famicom Tsūshin #364 | 1996 | 15/40 |
| VB Memorial Guidebook | 1997 | 23.5/100 |
Famitsu's 15/40 (4/4/4/3) is the lowest score it gave any Virtual Boy game. N64 Magazine reappraised it at 84/100 in 1999, and it is now the only Japanese exclusive on the platform available in English.
Worth knowing
- The only one that came back worldwide. Taito licensed it globally, so this is the sole Japanese exclusive available in English on Nintendo Classics. Most of the platform’s Japan-only titles are absent because their rightsholders will not license them, or because the publisher no longer exists.
Before you buy
High risk, with a twist: a well-made English reproduction trades around $430 against $571 for the genuine Japanese copy, because for players the translation was much of the value. The repro is not the problem — a repro sold as an original is. Sealed copies are the highest-risk resealing target on the platform.
