The launch title that best explains the whole machine — Punch-Out!! in first person, and the two D-pads finally make sense.
The Virtual Boy controller has two D-pads, which looks absurd until you play Teleroboxer, where each one is a fist. It is a first-person mech-boxing game in the Punch-Out!! lineage — read the tell, block, counter — and the first-person view plus real depth makes the dodging work in a way a side view can't. R&D1 built it to demonstrate the hardware, and it does that better than the pack-in did. Its ceiling is length: seven opponents and it is over.
How it was made
Directed by Yoshio Sakamoto — the director of Metroid — and produced by Gunpei Yokoi at Nintendo R&D1. Designer Masani Ueda also worked on Virtual Boy Wario Land; R&D1 reused a small core team across the platform's first-party library.
What the press said at the time
| GamePro | November 1995 | 4/5 |
| MAN!AC | October 1995 | 4/5 |
| Weekly Famicom Tsūshin #347 | 1995 | 23/40 |
| GameFan Vol. 3 #11 | 1995 | 66.5/100 |
| VB Memorial Guidebook | 1997 | 24.5/100 |
The Japanese Virtual Boy Memorial Guidebook was far harsher than the Western press — a pattern that repeats across this library.
Before you buy
Importing saves little here, so buy whichever copy is in better condition. Low counterfeit risk. This cart saves to battery-backed SRAM on a soldered CR1616 cell that is now over thirty years old; if saves vanish at power-off that is the battery, not the game. A Japanese demonstration version exists.
