Jeff Minter took Dave Theurer's 1981 vector arcade game and rebuilt it as a 100-level assault on your nervous system — power-ups, jump mechanics, enemies the original never attempted, and a techno soundtrack people bought separately on CD. You rotate a claw around the rim of a geometric web shooting things climbing toward you, and Minter layers particle effects until you're navigating on pattern recognition rather than sight. Players call it "the zone," and the phrase is accurate. Four modes ship, including a faithful recreation of the 1981 arcade original.

It was the Jaguar's second-best-selling game as of April 1995 — 291 copies ahead of Doom, a photo finish between the platform's two most-respected titles. Ports followed to Saturn, PlayStation, and PC; none is considered definitive. This is the argument that the Jaguar hardware was never the problem.

Common, cheap, and essential — no counterfeit concern. One buried feature worth knowing: undocumented rotary-controller support is hidden in the game (Options menu, hold Pause on both controllers — a voice shouts "Excellent!"). Atari cancelled the rotary controller; Minter left the code in, and the homebrew community now builds rotary controllers specifically for this game.
