About Waterworld

The sun. For millions of years the source of life. But for one planet the source of it's demise. The temperature climbed, the vast pools of ice at it's poles melted, and the oceans rose. Centuries later, few people remained on this planet, once called Earth. A lone mariner sails the expanse of water, trading to survive. For survival, is all these people do, in this place they know only as Waterworld.

Virtual Boy prices, all games & how to spot a fake

A bad game attached to a bad film on a dying console — a perfect artifact of 1995, and never coming to Switch.

Ocean's tie-in to the Kevin Costner flop, released for a console already on its way out, into a market that had rejected the movie. It is a repetitive top-down boat shooter that barely uses the 3D display, and its notoriety — bad game, bad film, bad hardware, stacked on one cartridge — has become part of the appeal. The print run was tiny because retailers wanted nothing to do with it, and that scarcity is the price. With Universal holding the film rights and Ocean of America long gone, it is about as permanently cartridge-only as a game gets.

What the press said at the time

Nintendo PowerNovember 199511.8/20
GameProMay 19962.5/5
VB Memorial Guidebook199730.5/100

Nintendo Power ran an exclusive review in the same issue that launched its reader-voted Virtual Boy chart — and 11.8/20 is the lowest score it gave any game on the platform. Waterworld never placed in that chart across its entire run, yet it is today the second-most-valuable North American cartridge.

Worth knowing

  • It will probably never be re-released. The film licence sits with Universal, not with a games company, and Waterworld is one of a small group of Virtual Boy titles absent from Nintendo Classics for rights reasons rather than scheduling. For now the cartridge is the only way to play it.

Before you buy

North America only, so no import route. Medium risk; box condition is the whole game at the complete and sealed tiers.
