Wolfenstein 3D is a 1992 first-person shooter game developed by id Software and published by Apogee Software and FormGen for MS-DOS. It was inspired by the 1981 Muse Software video game Castle Wolfenstein, and is the third installment in the Wolfenstein series. In Wolfenstein 3D, the player assumes the role of Allied spy William "B.J." Blazkowicz during World War II as he escapes from the Nazi German prison Castle Wolfenstein and carries out a series of crucial missions against the Nazis. The player traverses each of the game's levels to find an elevator to the next level or kill a final boss, fighting Nazi soldiers, dogs, and other enemies with a knife and a variety of guns.

Not a port — a remix, and for years the best-looking version of Wolfenstein 3D in existence.

id rebuilt the game for Jaguar with substantially higher-resolution textures and sprites — dramatic enough that modders later ripped art out of the Jaguar version to use elsewhere. Thirty levels instead of the PC's sixty, remixed rather than copied, with bosses from both Wolfenstein and Spear of Destiny and two new weapons: a flamethrower and a rocket launcher. The audio is a pleasing inversion — Bobby Prince's score was rearranged for the Jerry chip with richer samples, so the Jaguar's Wolfenstein has full in-game music while its Doom has none.

Historically, this was id's dry run: the team wanted to know whether the hardware could handle Doom, and this is where they found out. It sold just below Doom's 33,102 as of April 1995 — a strong performer by platform standards.
