Widely regarded as the best contemporary port of Robotron, and it costs almost nothing.

Shadowsoft handled this 1991 release, as it did Joust. Robotron is a twin-stick game on a machine with one stick and two buttons, so the control compromise is the thing people expect to hate and mostly do not. Contemporary reviewers went further than that: VideoGames & Computer Entertainment judged that Shadowsoft had “successfully downsized this huge arcade hit” and that the version “looks, sounds, and feels EXACTLY like its arcade predecessor”, from the flashing startup logo to the laser and explosion effects. That is a striking claim for a handheld in 1991, and it broadly holds up.

A single-screen game with high-contrast sprites, which also makes it one of the titles that looks least bad on an unmodded original display.

Before you buy

Cheap, low-risk, never re-released. Complete copies cost about double loose, which on this platform is the normal packaging tax rather than a warning sign.
